I don't understand how the current matchmaking system is even a discussion internally.

I think that the biggest problem, and where a lot of these complaints are coming from, is the limited information about a person's MMR available to us in the game.

The fact is that outside of pure T500 games you have no idea the current MMR of the vast majority of people in your lobbies. Anything that is displayed (even if you have public profile) is misleading at best.

Titles can be from OQ or a different role. Happened all the time in OW1 that a person who was GM on one role could be as low as Plat (or if they're smurfing, Bronze) on other roles. They mean almost nothing.

Your visible rank (if you have public profile) is only accurate if you've played a metric ton of games in Comp that season. Otherwise, it is completely unrelated to the MMR that you're actually being matched with (eg me, climbing from Diamond to GM with a 50% WR while matching up against OWL/T500 players simply because I was 4.3k in OW1).

I do not believe for a second any of these "1 gm, 2 plat dps, a diamond support, and a gold support" stories because that information is genuinely impossible to obtain.
