Dorian Phibian - Art Rocker running as Lone Democrat in Louisiana Congressional District 3 House race - AMA

What is the deal with my name(s)? [The Definitive Answer]:

I grew up in love with all things comic strip/comic book/video game/cartoon related. i would stay up all night at my grandparents' house or at home in my own room reading and re-reading every single Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, and The Far Side strip i could get my hands on. I studied them. They were my best friends. I still can't throw a comics page away.

I am most honored to say that I became a published comic strip artist while living in Athens, Georgia when I landed a job drawing weeklies for Flagpole Magazine. I moved to Athens for 3.5 years after Leaving LSU (I was a Music Theory & Composition major.) in order to immediately chase my dreams by following in the footsteps of Ruston, Louisiana natives & 60's music revivalists The Elephant 6 Recording Company, who moved to Athens in the early 90s.

In my very first strip for Flagpole, I submitted a comic strip/poem in which we are introduced to a Mozart-wig wearing and classically trained frog named Dorian Phibian. This name comes from a tiny bit of wordplay applied to the names of 2 musical modes: Dorian & Phrygian

People often assume the name has something to do with the classic Oscar Wilde novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, but i only just finally finished that book within the past year after my first 2 copies were destroyed (Long story....).

When I first moved to Lafayette in 2009, I started work on booking gigs and recording my debut solo album. History & family values aside, with a last name like "Hebert," I felt people in this region & beyond would see it on a marquee or a poster & instantly assume there was probably a fiddle, an accordion, and a washboard on every song. I remembered the comic poem fondly as well as the character & the rest is history.

I have not yet spoken with a specialist about this but I have seen plenty of names on ballots in the past where a nickname appeared in quotation between first and last name. I have been thinking: Jacob "Jake" ~Dorian Phibian~ Hebert I stand firm on this because I have, both figuratively & Literally, "made a name for myself in the Art & Music World." I see no good reason to give up the name recognition i have worked so hard to secure for myself under all of my titles.
