Doug Baldwin: Some treat NFL as 'modern-day slavery'

Again, it's not strictly about athletes recording no benefit -- it's about their self-determination being commandeered and their labor being exploited under the "student-athlete" guise.

But then just about everyone is a slave. I'm a slave.

  • The alternative to not working at my job is likely unemployment.

  • Even if there is alternative employment available, I am limited by the available market and demand for my skillset. The best chef in the world isn't going to be a candidate for a starting QB position in the NFL. The best cup-stacker in the world probably isn't hireable anywhere based on that skill.

The argument you can make is that the NFL shouldn't have an age limit.. but that's still their lawful prerogative.

It just so happens that the best market in the U.S. for a guy who is very good at playing football but not much else is playing football in the NCAA for a few years. (Although as an alternative, he could go play for a foreign football league.)

In return, he gets the opportunity for an education ($100-200k), and national exposure which is essentially a mark on resume for future employers.

That doesn't sound like slavery.
