That brought up a memory of an old story I heard as a kid, maybe in one of the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" books.

Someone kept getting calls from an unknown number but no one would be on the line. They reported the calls but the calls continued. Eventually they started hearing odd noises, almost like speaking through the phone and they started freaking out. They get another call and they start yelling and screaming into the receiver, only to stop and find that it was a normal phonecall; a telephone operator called to say the company traced the signal and that it would be fixed shortly.

There had been a storm a few days previous which knocked out a telephone pole on the outskirts of town. The line was laying on the ground where it had fallen: into the local cemetery where several family members had been interred.
