Yes, they break a lot of laws. But they have a lot of money and are huge political donors so they have a lot of political clout and often with impunity.
I actually count many ex-members as loved ones. I love the people, and I believe deep down people are good and others damage them. But I hate the cult and all of the damage and destruction it leaves in its wake. It's hard to be sympathetic when you see that everyday.
You can't leave without being shunned, cut off from everyone and disowned and potentially leaving your kids. You can't engage with the secular world, and you are taught it's dangerous. You are taught everyone else is against you and evil. You can't have friends outside your community, even kids can't play with secular kids at the park. Your education is complete shit, and you have no skills to survive on your own. You are completely dependent on your community for everything. You can barely communicate effectively. Women have few rights and are considered lesser. (There are way too many examples to list, but a few sources include 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). This all describes a textbook cult.
They are well known for defrauding welfare, housing, and Medicaid. And insane mortgage fraud.
They are known for threatening and intimidating witnesses, particularly in sex abuse crimes. They also have a major sex abuse problem, and throw bleach on people and they ruin people's lives who dare speak out. It's so bad the long-time DA was ousted because he let them police themselves for political support and failed to charge sex offenders and other criminals.
They hate bikers, and they cause problems and attack them. They have blocked bike lanes on public streets in their neighborhoods because of the "hotties" who are just too spicy, and that it's a safety and religious hazard.
They have their own police, and they are not afraid to use their muscle and get aggressive.
A local Hasid school tried to buy, bribe, harass (they rang my bell 36 times over 3 days and insisted I let them in my house and tried to push their way in), and threaten their way into illegally taking our local community garden, and they do everything they can do show their ire over the failure, including dumping trash there.
And then there is their completely selfish and shitty behavior on planes, including property destruction (There are so many instances, but here are a few 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
