Driving to San Francisco for Thanksgiving any advice?

First time I had an engine break down on a cross country trip so we had to take a bus from Spokane to Portland. Second time was the overnighter from Eugene to the Bay area where I was sat down next to a guy who I can only assume was on cocaine because he did not stop talking at a loud volume disturbing everyone around us for the entire 12-hour ride. I ended up sleeping in the observation car. The third time I was just taking my kids for a trip so they could be on a train and we went to Salem from Eugene and the seats I was assigned were full of garbage and we went to go to the observation car and it was full, also the train was 2 hours late coming from Klamath falls. I assume they somehow got lost in the Cascades. So three out of three times it wasn't fun for me. I love the idea of train travel it just is consistently a fail. Those are my just my own personal experiences though, I'm sure some people get lucky.
