Dutchy here, thinking Tri-State was exclusively used for NY, NJ and CT but it's a term for ~25 populated areas elsewhere in the country, shared by three states. Now my Q is: "Did people move there because they wanted to trade with the other states"? Or do people live there cause of geography?

Hello, so yeah, I'm not from the area, most of what I've seen is very cursory. I mentioned I'm from southern California but I spent highschool in Humboldt County. I've got family from around Bend, and I lived in central WA for a couple years so I was able to explore a bit more.

I've got family in Ontario, Idaho. I visited again as an adult, but as a kid, the town kind had a worn down feeling that was a little unsettling. I liked the area around Walla Walla quite a bit, it's nicer in the summers than where I was living, but I looked it up just now, I guess the closest town was Milton-Freewater but I dont think I went there, Stateline was it's own weird little place. That's where I met the prepubescent and potentially future murderer -at the public pool. He stole birthday cake from the kids party I was attending.

And then in highschool I had a friend from what I thought might have been Burns, that's what I remembered anyway. It may have been Baker City, but I'm not quite sure. Small town, eastern Oregon. And he was hilarious but he had horror stories that were like a mix of the movies Lost Boys and Hostel, plus a lot more adolescent drug use and because I was semi-familiar with the area, it always spooked me a little.

Also in my border-land encyclopedia in my head, I walked across the Ecuador-Colombia border, and the Ecuador-Peru border. I watched police drag a guy off a bus in Peru, I still wonder about him. I got hustled for more cash than I was willing to spend crossing from Peru, on a Sunday when the banks were closed and came as close to a fist fight as I've ever been in. Crossing into Colombia, everyone has a mean mug on their face -like anyone who's ever lived in Bakersfield. But also, everyone had pinkeye, so I felt a little extra nervous. I'm no medic, but I avoided the water there more than anymore.

End rant. Thank you if you got this far. I'm just suspicious of border towns is all. And I stand by that sentiment thus far.
