Ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth are currently legal in Ireland due to a ruling in the Court of Appeal on the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 this morning.

The problem is that without the gangster who is constrained in his operations due to the law and having to trust his clients, a completely open market with any sort of drug for sale will mean maximum harm to the most vulnerable members of society.

But I realize I'm in the minority for actually caring about such people. We seem to be in a phase nowadays where a lot of people have absolutely zero empathy or heart, it's one of major reasons out of a handful why I think we may be approaching the end of days--and I'm not a religious fundamentalist or even someone who reads apocalyptic material like The Book of Revelations. Such people don't give one fig if these vulnerable populations die due to their drug use because they write off their conscience by falsely concluding that such a person would've died anyways or even that such a person deserves to die (it makes me sick but I believe this is unfortunately the more common attitude today).

I've not been a strong religious believer during my life although I never wrote it off like many modern atheists and non-believers have. From talking to atheists online, I can't help but conclude that this shift to less compassion is related to people becoming less religious. Becoming less religious means that you look at an intractable, tough problem that's been occurring for hundreds of years and simply see it as natural, as a process of nature.

For some issues this is indeed true, however, I believe this POV far too easily lead to evil. The older I get, the more apparent the problems of organized religion have become, however on the other hand, the more important religion in general seems--especially the fact that it can give people hope when there is nearly no reason to have hope.

This can also lead to evil, for example Terry Shiavo and how modern medicine's end of life care can be horrifically abusive to human rights and dignity AND how many religious people simply believe environmental damage is actually a good sign that Rapture is nearly here. However, I fear we have lost balance and moved way to far into viewing the world through the lens of reason and science and have not heeded the warning that "the sleep of reason produces monsters"
