Yep. I'll never understand how so many people (mostly my irl friends and family) don't think of this. Mostly it's just that they don't really care about new phones as much as I do, and to their point the iPhone 7 was the first phone ever that I didn't upgrade to. It just had so few features I literally forgot it existed until I started reading the new rumors.
That said, I think it's a steal that I can upgrade to this insane glass/aluminum device every year for just around $300. Keep my old one in good shape, sell it and upgrade for just a fraction of the MSRP out of pocket. With the amount of rumored tech coming I completely understand that they want to push the price point a little higher. It blows my mind that these things don't cost $1500 already. They work far harder designing and cramming the amount of advancements in a TINY slate than the MacBook pros. To me it's worth more money in sheer human effort and ingenuity to build an iPhone (pro?) than picking a few parts off the shelf and elegantly placing them in a relatively massive enclosure.
I guess my point is that everyone values their phones differently and when I was in high school I tried so hard to fanboy an iPhone into everyone's lives. Now I cringe at how obsessed I was with feeling the need to sell an iPhone for Apple. But I do explain to those who ask me questions about it, that it's not as expensive it seems if you play the game right.
