Why is the ego considered something we should get rid of if most everyone naturally has it to begin with?

Awakening is realizing experientally the fundamental unreality of the ego. Its a tiny bit like if you imagine you walk into a dimly lit room and you see a snake. You feel fear, and you're trying to rapidly come up with a plan. Suddenly the light turns on and you see that there was no snake, it was just a rope.

Did you get rid of the snake? Did you "kill" the snake? How exactly would you respond if someone posted on the "trying to turn on the light in my room" subreddit saying "I have a question about the snake, you see I keep hearing people say you need to kill the snake but I think the snake might be nice!"

Would you tell them the snake isn't real? Would that really mean anything to them if they insist that the snake exists, but is getting a bad rap?
