ELI5 - why do animated shows turn movies (simpsons, spongebob, rugrats, bob’s burgers, etc.) have a distinct look compared to their tv show? why not keep the same look the tv show is known for?

Because the cut corners are a lot more obvious when you’re watching an uninterrupted 90 minutes of it on a theatre screen.

For reference of full movies being made by tv animation studios, that’s what Atlantis was. Atlantis tanked at the box office and was slammed hard by critics for the obvious drop in quality compared to what you expect for a theatrical animated release. And Disney did this specifically because they wanted the same studio to produce a tv series to continue in the same style. The movie was a glorified pilot episode. It was an experimental new business model, and the experiment failed.

Outside of Atlantis, Disney’s direct to home video movie releases, like the Aladdin sequels, were all produced by their tv animation studios. If you ever wondered why they never released any of those sequel movies in theatres, this is why. They tried releasing tv quality animated movies in theatres, and it lost money, despite the movie itself being produced on the cheap.
