Eli5: Why are companies so scared of unions?

Adding:

A strong union also provides its members with effective access to legal representation in the event of employment disputes or unfair termination.

If you look at employment related questions on r/legaladvice almost all of them are things where the person likely can’t afford a lawyer, and if they wanted to try litigate it they could easily spend several months salary on legal representation.

If you’re in a Union and the employer tries any of this bullshittery you call your rep, they’ll call one of the lawyers they have either on staff or on retainer, and you’ll have effective legal representation by the end of the day.

The mere fact Union employees are able to summon legal representation like this discourages employers from attempting a lot of shit employers routinely pull on comparable non-Union workers.
