eli5 Why are glass bottles not used more for soft drinks if plastic is such a nightmare for the planet?

Back when I was a kid in the 70s, my mom kept 2 liter soda bottles in the garage, right near the door to go inside. I dropped an unopened bottle there on the concrete and it didn’t just shatter, it exploded. I had to get 13 stitches on one gash on the inside of my ankle, and 6 on another. They cut so deep I didn’t even feel them and didn’t know until I looked down.

What was crazier still was there was glass embedded in the big garage door a whole car length away. I don’t know but accidents even worse would come on the news at times if someone was suing. That could be at least part of the reason glass bottles became extinct or at least rare.
