ELI5: Assuming aliens existed, why wouldn't the world government share that information with the public?

  • Aliens asked them to. Nicely.
  • The government wants to use this knowledge for some kind of gain.
  • Those aliens are repulsive as fuck to most humans.
  • The aliens are too cute, people will hunt them down for profit if they knew.
  • The government don't know what they want and actively investigates that. Disclosing them would hinder it.
  • Aliens are hostile and the planet will 100% be destroyed in 50 years. So why made people die in misery.
  • Aliens formed The Matrix and the government made from its agents. There is no government.
  • They were brainwashed or replaced by aliens already.
  • Aliens were used to outsource most of government's jobs and decisions. They don't want to lose jobs if people knew.
  • We wouldn't believe even if we were told. Like aliens being ethereal inhabitants of plant-life that communicate with specific individuals via quantum entanglement.
  • They are illegal immigrants. Too many paperwork to disclose them now. Possible witch-hunts.
  • Aliens want a touristic spot with naturally behaving locals in their untouched habitat.
