ELI5: Why can’t we just down tools and pause the economy for four months and then pick up where we left off without a recession?

If everyone was just frozen and thawed 4 months later, that would have no effect on the economy, right?

It's about the difference between production and consumption?

I think if everybody had saved up enough money from working before the pausing work and companies would have saved up enough stuff to sell before pausing production, there would be no problem. You could go further and consume less in that period and the stockpiles of the companies would need to be smaller.

The downside would be, besides having less "non-essential" consumption, that the few people how still do half the work would need to pay higher taxes so they can provide for many more unproductive people.
