"Memory failure" can mean a lot of things - could be any number of hardware/software issues relating to memory. The bsod itself results from an error within memory, but the cause of that error is not easy to diagnose.

Microsoft would get a lot of complaints if they changed the error message to "Your ram is bad", and then when the user replaces their ram, the issue is still present.

Such error codes provide an easy way for a typical user to communicate the problem to someone who has experience in dealing with those problems, so that they can troubleshoot it for you. If you are more tech savvy, you can search Google for the error and troubleshoot it yourself.
