ELI5: Why is it good for you to "air out" a cut or other such wound?

I don’t have any insight beyond being a physical therapy student who just sat through 16 hours of wound care lecture, but our professor (who works as a wound care specialist) told us it is never a good idea to leave a wound to air out. It is important to keep the wound covered, and depending on what type of wound it is (diabetic, arterial, venous, pressure, etc) take the proper steps for controlling proper amount of moisture within the wound (venous are wet, arterial are dry, diabetic are callused). If a wound is deeper, it is easier for the body to repopulate a wound with cells if the wound is “filled” with the correct type of gauze (not your typical gauze-they can shred in the wound and cause issues).
