ELI5: How and why are books like The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men chosen for reading in English classes?

Well yea maybe. I think my writing style is more due to my preference for and adherence to rules and grammar as well as my affinity for logic. Whether my limited background in literature contributes to that or not, I can't say (how do I find a control in this experiment?).

I appreciate the compliment though; I do try to articulate my thoughts accurately, but like I said, I think I attribute that more to my concern with grammar and those rules more than I do my background in literature. My wife and I actually disagree strongly on my language, because I often interpret things literally while she sees some "underlying meaning" in language that I often fail to interpret or intend to say . For example, I can state a fact like "blacks commit the majority of homicides in Chicago," and she will interpret that as some sort of racist assertion. I see why she would see that as racist, but I don't necessarily see the simple statement of that fact as racist. I'm not trying to say blacks are in some way inferior, but from a purely statistical standpoint, this is true.

I try to live by the mantra "say what you mean, and mean what you say." And it's odd to me that what I say is often interpreted differently than what I mean despite how clearly and concisely I say it.
