(actual poker pro) pro tip: it is actually the bigger games where you have less "house edge", i.e., the rake is typically "time rake" , $7 a half hour here in maryland, and this is a lot less than "flop / drop" rake at smaller games such as $1/$3 or $2/$5 ... the rake in those games (10% of every hand that sees a flop + $2 for bad beat jackpot -- capped max at $7 per hand ) , is much higher percentage of the pot , and more frequent ... comes out to be like $100-120 per half hour taken off the table depending on how fast the game is moving, whereas $5/$10 time-rake games are $7 per person (9 handed so $63 for full games). You also get more "comps" for playing in bigger games , which is like getting some money back that you can spend on food or hotel rooms, you get $3 an hour here for high-stakes games and $2 an hour for low stake.
of course there is the counter argument that there are better players in the bigger games, but this is not always the case -- the biggest 'whales' play the biggest games, and sometimes the biggest games have been the absolute softest games ive ever played in my life. Sometimes it is worth taking $1000 and taking a shot at a bigger game if it looks particularly soft. Just my two cents, play at your own risk/discretion.
