ELI5: How do professional poker players make a sustained income, when they are against other pro-poker players?

Back in the hay day of online poker, making a really good income online was pretty easy to be honest.

I played 9 tables at a time of 3/6 (6-Max) limit holdem at about a 1bb/100 winrate, which was shit compared to a lot of people but with Poker Tracker and a HUD.... you had to be pretty dumb or have a major gambling problem to not make money.

9 tables is conservatively 700+ hands an hour. 1bb=$6 $6x7... was making on average $40+ an hour playing.

With rakeback deals and bonuses giving me another 1bb or so at least, $50 an hour was far from unheard of even at 3/6FL6Max

I had the bankroll to play 5/10... but I also never went below a 750bb for my stakes... which meant I could have a terrible run of cards and easily lose $1000 a week and it not be a big deal at all.

Back then cashing out your money took just a few hours and you could literally get am ATM card to withdraw your winnings pretty much anywhere (neteller ftw) or do wire transfers for bigger amounts.

Lol then UIGEA or whatever it was called came down and it all went to shit. Had over 5 grand froze for months from the DOJ and that was the end of my short-lived poker career.
