ELI5: How do I reduce my water consumption by 25%?

We did have a leak when we >Assuming California.

I would dump the veggie garden first. Your government has basically deemed that individuals using water is bad, while big agriculture using water is good. So, follow their lead. Sorry, no harvest this year.

I would also recommend that you research using your dishwasher, which, if it's not old, might be more water efficient than washing by hand.

You also need to watch your meter, checking multiple times a day, when you aren't using water. You might have a leak that you don't know about, or someone might be stealing water from you. Yes, this happens.

I would also start complaining to your water company about the cut backs, that you are being penalized for being more water efficient earlier in the drought (I'm guessing that you have been water conscious for a few years now). Ask for a representative to visit your home and approve your water usage.

How long have you lived in this home? Often this situation happens when a family with 3 kids moves into a house, where the former owner was a widow who used no water.

Also, sorry to get political. You should vote and protest for more free market influences in water, instead of the current California system, which is essentially rationing controlled by agriculture. That way, in a drought, the price of water may rise, but you don't get fined hundreds (thousands) of dollars for not conserving, and the rich bastards who waste the most water (i.e., that golf course, and corporate agriculture who lobbies for cheap water rather than installing drip irrigation systems) pay the most automatically.

bought the house but we have been cleared of any leaks since. Water meter is not really accessible. We can't dump the garden, we harvest a lot of food for our backyard chickens and frankly produce from my garden tastes much better than the stuff I can buy. I'm not budging there. We don't have a dishwasher, removed it for more cupboard space in my 1940s home. The prior owner was a single mother of one teenager and we are just two adults. I'm going to call the water company but since we get water via the city, my guess is that will be no help since city hall still has its lush lawns. Thanks for your input, I do vote and write letters. I love that so much agriculture is here in CA, but we could all live without having a grassy lawn in a desert like area. >Assuming California.
