ELI5 Why ice/compress/elevate immediately when it’s fighting the body’s repair mechanisms?

Ice compression and elevation do reduce pain and swell. That’s it, they do nothing to help the repair. Compression and ice actually reduce blood flow which is detrimental.

It’s good to freeze the situation for a minute to prevent some useless pain, but that’s it.

The opposite is quite good for healing as long as you don’t have broken blood vessels. Heat, lack of pressure and no elevation, maybe massage too. The more blood you get there the more rescue the area gets.

Ultrasound, doppler, radio, and standard heating are all treatments that cure inflammation by increasing blood flow in the area. But be aware these methods will increase perceived pain

And again, you should increase the blood flow in an area only if you are sure it won’t do damage. Just after impact it’s better to let the body do it’s thing and supervise what’s going on, and use ice or similar if needed for pain relief maybe. But maybe just take a pill.
