ELI5: Racism (Country hate?) Amongst Europeans

I'll give it a shot.

I understand you'd like a portion of typical European nationalist stereotypes and 'likes and dislikes'. I can say a few words about Balkan stereotypes. Please note that what I'm going to write is VERY general and don't take it literally. These are incredibly complicated and extremely sensitive matters, going back to around year 1300 - imagine I'm asking you to explain racial stereotypes in USA in 10 words or less, so you go on with 'Black people hate white people, white people hate Mexicans...'. It's like that. So please, please, take it with a grain of salt, I can not stress this enough. In some cases I'm right to use the term 'nationalists', but in others not so much, as for example you do not have to be Ukrainian nationalist to hold grudge against Russian foreign politics etc.

  1. Serbian nationalists believe Bosnia and Kosovo should belong to Serbia and have been 'taken' from Serbia. Hence 'Kosovo je Serbja' ('Kosovo is Serbian'). It's also commonly used by nationalists from other Slavic countries, particularly from Montenegro, FYROM (Macedonia), Poland, as a form of solidarity with Slavic Serbs against Albanians. Serbians also hate Croatians and the typical insult here will be 'ustase'.
  2. Nationalists from everywhere but Russia hate Serbs, particularly: Albanians, Kosovars, Croatians, Bosnjaks (Bosnian Muslims). Look for 'Srbe na vrbe!' or 'Za dom spremni'. Typical insults will include words: 'cetnik'/'cetnici', 'vlasi' or 'shki'. 'Cetnik' is the most popular.
  3. All nationalists except Serbian hate Russians, especially Ukrainian and Chechen. Look for basically anything with 'russkiy'/'russkij', it will likely be followed by an insult.
  4. Makedonians are quite tense nowadays about Albanians. Insluts might include word (?not sure here?) 'Shpion' or 'Shiptar'.
  5. When Slavic people from Balkans call someone 'turcin', 'turk', 'poturica', like in slogan 'Ubij Turcina', they don't mean actually Turkish. It's an offensive term for non-Slavs and/or Muslims, particularly Bosnjaks (Bosnian Muslims). Another popular offensive term for a Bosnjak is 'balija'.
  6. Serbian offenses towards Bosnjaks may also include terms like: 'Noz, zica, Srebrenica' (or anything else about Srebrenica), 'Bice repriza'.
  7. Also watch for offensive terms like 'Cigani', Slavic term for a 'Gypsie'.
  8. The most popular curse in Eastern Europe is 'kurve'/'kurwa', in Slavic languages also 'jebati' (in various forms, for example 'jebi', 'jebac cie', 'jebi tvoju mamu' etc.).

Hope this helps.
