Elysian Shadows developer (Polish) writes "Love Letter to Person Who Demands Racial Quotas in Witcher 3"

I think the "shitstorm" around this game is largely due to the size of the release and the game's overwhelmingly positive critical reception and not so much a result of particularly egregious content. From an exposure standpoint it's an ideal target. It's a beloved and successful recent game that will create a lot of angry backlash if looked at critically, and that's something some critics definitely welcome.

This piece is very reasonable, but there are a lot of people freaking out over a lot of criticism that isn't really all that harsh. A lot of people have a hard time just shrugging and saying "fair enough, I still think it's a fantastic game." People need to stop pretending all these critics are advocating censorship or mandatory quotas for various disenfranchised groups; they are merely attempting to put pressure on developers to address issues they feel strongly about. Honestly I can see CDPR releasing DLC that features people of color because of this stuff. Assuming it's up to their usual standard of writing I can't see how any rational person could possibly be offended by such an outcome.

We do need a more diverse array of cultures represented in games, but not a situation where every developer must strive to shoehorn diversity into every game. The latter arguably hurts diversity, if anything. If the modern BioWare formula is your thing, fair enough, but I would lose my shit if every RPG had to turn into that. I think Witcher 3 actively tries to engage with issues of oppression and racism in a way that doesn't feel hamfisted. That's why I think this is a bad target from a critical standpoint.

You also have to consider the quandary the developers are in in this situation. There may be a reluctance for a bunch of white Polish dudes to try to write people of color, not from subconscious racism but from a fear of fucking it up. I think it's incredibly likely they would have faced accusations of tokenism had they included people of color, whether or not they were well-written. Pick your poison.

Finally, I will just say that the fact that there is a lack of diversity in the field of game development is definitely a problem that needs more addressing, so if there's anything positive to come from all of this bickering hopefully it's attention given to that.
