Employees of Midas, Jiffy Lube, Meineke, or any other oil change/car maintenance place: How much are you really screwing me over?

I had a HORRIBLE experience with Midas in my town. I had gotten my inspection done 2 weeks prior (done by a reputable mechanic who owns his own shop and has been servicing my dad's vehicles since they were teenagers) but was taking my car into Midas for a wheel alignment. I arrived, parked my car in the parking lot about 10ft from the service doors, gave them my keys, and sat for an hour in the waiting room.

After an hour of waiting, a mechanic comes to me and brings me out to the garage where my van is. He tells me that they can't do my wheel alignment because of an issue with one of my tire rods. However, he tells me I need a brake line replaced because he "broke a brake line while backing my car in".

My first question was, why was I sitting for an hour before they tell me they can't do the alignment that I was there for? Secondly, how does one break a brake line moving a car 10ft from a parking lot into the shop?

I was upset at this point but couldn't drive it without proper brakes, so I had no choice but to get them to fix it. I called my father and boyfriend who both thought I was being screwed over. They made me pay for the brake line to get fixed even though the mechanic admitted that he broke it. But the icing on the cake is, my boyfriend drove us back up about 20 minutes later to talk to them and see if I was being scammed. He asked for the pieces of broken brake line they had taken off.

They gave us two pieces of brake line which were crimped on each end, and told us the broken part was still on my van. The brake line pieces they gave us were brand new, and were the same lines replaced in my vehicle 2 weeks prior during my MVI.

I've always felt really uneasy about this experience with them.
