Encountering Racism in Latin America - would love to hear the opinions of more Colombians

Could you please elaborate?

Sure. Cultural appropriation is not bad in itself, but the context in which it is made can make it so.

for example: the black face is bad when the whites do it in the United States because, you know ... the slavery.

so, rightly, black people get angry when they see (the decendents of) the beneficiaries of slavery using their culture, their identity as a comedy costume.

But Colombia is not the United States, here most of us are not descendants of the colonizers but of the colonized. So with that context, when and why is it bad?

He pointed at the soldier Micolta, a guy in black face exaggerating blackness for the sake of "comedy" on a television network. The context is important, that is why soldier Micolta was considered racist.

But why is it bad when black children do "black face"? Here this is not perceived as such, nor do they mock the blackness.

so it's just bad for him, because he does not care about Colombian culture but to project his perceptions.

But he is white so he knows best!!!

who cares that the carnival was originally the slaves who celebrated when they were not supposed, and that the whites could not stop them, so instead try to regulted the celebration with a manifesto that until today is read outloud in the carnival.

nah, learning about other cultures is too much effort. After all, he spent a week in Colombia, surely that is more than enough to understand the complex of racial dynamics in another culture. he is white. He knows best!!!

and thats the white savior guilt. The projection of white perceptions about other cultures as universal laws. He feels he has to save us from our racism, even if he does not understand the racial tensions in our culture.
