WE Energies asks all WI Nat Gas customers to lower thermostat immediately due to gas shortage.

I know a lot about physics, and I can guarantee it is that simple. If you add more energy to a system than it loses, its temperature increases. That’s how heat works.

What you’re talking about is reducing the energy lost, but I’m talking about increasing the energy added, assuming you want to keep the house as-is. Pragmatically, it’s rather unlikely that the original owners of the house lived with the house at 55º, so it’s quite likely their heating system added more heat energy to the house than yours does. Your heating system isn’t working properly, with the problems with your radiators, etc., so it sounds like the first step for you is to get someone out there to fix the existing system. Once that’s done, if you want to add insulation and so on, in the name of efficiency, you certainly can, and it will lower your heating bills, but you can always simply add more heat, instead.
