To the engineers of askmen, what advice would you give a young student interested in working in energy?

You have a classroom full of connections, assuming you're still enrolled.

Now, I never went to college, but I work in the trades. Do you know how I get most of my work? From people I've worked with on other jobs. I'm not close with these people, just acquaintances. We talk at work, we work together well, but otherwise that's it.

Once we're no longer on the same project I get texts from all sorts of people who want to know where I am and what I'm doing. When I'm out of work I send the same texts to them.

You never know who will have what kind of connections into the next job. You don't have to be the best in the business, you just have to bust your ass and the best in the business will want to be around you because they know they can rely on you and that you can get the job done.

Make those connections, any connections, the worst guy in the class can be anyone with any number of connections. I've got jobs from guys I would have sold down the river, but they're best friends with so and so on the next project so I stick with them out of my own preservation to pay my bills and feed myself.

If you've already graduated then yeah, you shit the bed. All that's left to do is roll over in it.
