Why is the English curriculum in our country such a joke?

Media literacy is too important to ignore, and exposure to it at a youngish age is very important. I remember very clearly when we were reading poetry in school and thinking my teachers interpretations were an unbelievable stretch because it wasn't literally what was said in the poem. Then gradually realizing that what my teacher was saying was exactly what the poet intended. That alone taught me to look well beyond what I was actually reading and how to make connections with other works/historical events/personal experiences. It also taught me how to pick up on how a point of view can be influenced by the person sharing it (intentionally or unintentionally). These are skills we still need to practice every single day, for example, how we consume our news. These are skills that someone can go their entire life without developing and without even realizing, and that's honestly a sad thought to me.
