To bring this back to games: that’s mostly what I’m worried about. Spotify and video streaming blazed the trail, and now MS is pushing subscriptions hard. Even Apple’s on board. Every small dev I’ve talked to is borderline panicking wondering how they’re going to pay their bills on subscription-based revenue once that’s what everyone expects and the initial sweetheart deals dry up, given the upfront development costs of games. Shorter game developers in particular seem stressed, since the fear is the pay is based on time played
