That is one of my all-time favorite quotes in general, and im a Christian. I love it because its him just acknowledging that religion/faith can truly HELP people when they need it most. “The sigh of the oppressed”, it can be the thing that helps people find a meaning to live (case in point, me; i struggle with clinical depression and have been suicidal, yet my faith has helped me immensely). I at first that the whole “opium”-bit was just an edgelord antitheist thing as well, but when i realized that it was a genuine “the world is fucked up, people are dying, you can’t feed your kids, your boss underpays you, you struggle with rent, the police are bastards, it is as if the whole world is out to destroy what you love; so who am i to deny you this ‘opiate’?” Its as if denying someone after working a 12-hr shift a beer. At least thats how ive taken it, and i love it.
