Episode Discussion - Shameless - 5x12 "Love Songs (in the Key of Gallagher)" - SEASON FINALE

I know it won't be a popular opinion here, but I thought that finale was absolutely awful. It's sad to see the heights this series hit last season, and where it ended up this season.

The Deb-Fiona stuff worked. But beyond that...

  1. The Fiona arc was terrible and de-evolutionary, at best, for her character this season. It also went nowhere.

  2. Carl had a chance to be a real, meaningful, interesting character after last season. Nope. Reduced to punchline, then removed.

  3. Lip was just more Lip. Which is whatever; it just wasn't interesting in the slightest.

  4. The Frank-Bianca stuff actually worked incredibly well. It says loads about this season that one of the few things that worked well was a short arc in which Frank elopes with someone to Costa Rica. I don't mind that they ended this, but the way in which they did and how Frank returned to Chicago were embarrassingly bad.

  5. The Kev-V stuff was awful all season long. I mean, everyone is going to have opinions, but seriously, even in the world where everyone watches this show differently ... I can't see any way in which anyone felt this season was better for having any of that Kev and V stuff in it.

  6. I don't know what showrunners are/aren't planning to do with Mickey-Ian, but that final scene between them was incredibly sloppy and stupid. For pretty much the only realistic gay relationship I've seen on TV, and one of the bedrock relationships that makes this series work, you just can't be that sloppy.

  7. Monica is always interesting, and may be this series' most tragic character actually. But again, just incredibly sloppy how they introduced and closed that arc. Chloe Webb's talents are wasted with that shit.

  8. Did anyone want Sammi back? Anyone? Again, just more example of how this series had an interesting character/scenario last season, and completely devolved it this season.

I'm pretty pissed about this season overall. There were some moments that worked, but just moments. I told everyone to really buy into this series after season four, because it was up there with the best of TV last season. But this season was such a backslide, I'm finding it hard to rightfully qualify.
