European clubs’ wage bill and net profits 2020/21

On page 25 of this 2019 UEFA report it reveals how much the average team in many different European leagues are spending on player’s wages. The average PL team spends 76% of their total wage bill on players. In the Bundesliga it’s 77% etc.

Now obviously this is a league average, it will be higher at some clubs and lower at others but the purposes of estimating first team player wages I’m just going to use the average. Another thing is I believe youth team & women’s players will be grouped into that so as a guess I’m going to take away 3% to account for those.

If we take West Ham for example https://imgur.io/a/HA65fOB

Their wage costs were £112.9M on wages which will include all bonuses, sign on fees, image rights etc, £16.3M on social security and £250,000 on pension costs. 73% of £112.9M is £84.2M, divided by 25 first team player works out at about £3.3m per year or £63,000 a week for the average first team player. Unlikely to be exactly accurate but probably not far wrong either.

From the total wage bill figures I’ve come up with what I’d like to think are plausible estimates for first team player wages for the 20/21 season. These numbers definitely aren’t accurate but for most teams they should be in the right ballpark at least.
