Have you ever been in a "great friends, terrible roommates" situation? How did it work out for you?

Lived with seven other people for a year during college, me + two guys and five girls in a downtown lofted apartment. I actually didn't know any of them that well when I first moved in, but we all quickly became very good friends. First semester went amazingly, as clean as expected from 8 college students sharing an apartment, no fighting, great time. Second semester rolls around and some sorority drama goes down and the girls got real cliquey, with three of the girls being mean to the two girls who got into the "best" sorority, and probably vice-versa. I, luckily, had made two best new mates that I was living with and we generally could ignore most of the drama and contribute to the living space but man were there some screaming matches about absolutely nothing. Ended up living with those guys for the next two years in a house having the time of our lives. I'm not sure I would suggest living with seven other people of mixed genders, but if there's a time to do it, its definitely college.
