To elaborate more on what I'm talking about, I grew up in the 90s so I was around when games like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid came out. However, I never played those games or even knew a whole lot about them until years later. I didn't play Final Fantasy VII until I was 19 (in 2009) and the only thing I knew from it was Aerith dies. The thing was, as I played the game, I was suddenly hit with this wave of nostalgia, that I remember this feeling of playing this game back when it first came out. The same with Metal Gear Solid, playing it gave me this sensation of being back in the 90s. I have no real emotional connection to playing these games as a kid (or anything like them, I mostly played platformers as a kid) but just the colours, the music, the scenery (in FFVII's case), it all takes me back to a moment in time that I never experienced other than the simple fact that I was a kid when these games came out.
