Ever quit before you had another job secured?

Yes. Not in the same industry but I worked for a small brokerage firm, and was being bullied by the two brokers who worked there, and they happened to be brothers. It was just the three of us and their sister in law who was the sweetest woman in the world but warned me day one that they could get angry and not to take it personally. I shook it off, and assumed it’d be fine.

They told me that they’d rather I asked questions then made mistakes but if I asked, the worse at the two would laugh and mutter ‘you really are stupid aren’t you’ and not answer it. The slightly better one would depend on his mood but on a bad day he’d be berating me with ‘how do you not know this? seriously how have you not figured this out?’. This was them knowing it was my first admin job at all, first job in finance, and no, i was not given adequate training. I was micromanaged to extreme degrees, as admin half my job was answering the phone but my heart was pounding every time it rang because they had criticism for me every time it rang and sometimes they would even sit behind me during a phone call and talk at the same time as the other person was speaking and instruct me on what to say. I asked him to stop talking (politely) one time so I could actually hear the other person on the phone. I was dragged through hell the rest of the day. They accused me of pretending to be sick after I called in on a Wednesday, then came in Thursday and was told sneeringly I shouldn’t develop a habit of getting drunk during the week, rather than asking if I was feeling better.

Now I don’t recommend this path whatsoever, but I had no other job lined up, and I got drunk one night and was crying to my boyfriend over the phone about how I really didn’t want to work the next day and in fact I didn’t want to work there at all because they were bullies, shit human beings, through and through. So he said tell them you can’t come in. And 3am, right there and then I just texted ‘I’m not coming in tomorrow’. Then I thought fuck it, in for a penny, in for a pound, and another text 20 mins later ‘actually you know what? I’m never coming in again. Fuck you’. They didn’t reply and texted a few days later that I had until ‘the end of the day to return the key’. I blocked their numbers, waited 4 weeks then mailed it to them.

Again, I don’t recommend this. But to answer your question, yes I have.
