Have you ever quit a job, without another lined up, for you mental health? How did it turn out?

I used to work in security. I did security for a local hospital a while back. I was only paid 12/hr and had to deal with people physically on the daily (suicidal people who want to fight to leave or hurt themselves, drug rehab patients who are coming down, etc) in the emergency room. It was already stressful as is. We had this drug rehab patient come in one day who made me realize I couldn't take it anymore. Our rehab facility was on the 5th floor of a 6 floor building. While he was there, he had his gf sneak in drugs to him (I forget what kind). He had to "use the restroom" and was in there for quite some time. The nurse watching him entered the restroom after he failed to respond to knocks. She's found him slumped on the ground with a needle in his arm, so she called security. As soon as we got up to the 5th floor, he freaked out and started trying to fight every one. This guy punched my supervisor in the face, tackled and bodyslammed a female guard who was barely over 5 feet and 100 lbs and during the scuffle. He had a bone infection in his finger and had some sort of IV running to it. It got ripped out during the fight and he started bleeding everywhere.

Dude jets to the stairwell and runs down to the ground floor. Other guards started chasing him. The female guard was one of them and threw up in the stairwell after she saw how much blood was on her (5th floor is usually pretty dark, stairwells are well lit). He was eventually cornered in the parking lot and brought back to the room. Police were called and he was scheduled for arrest after his rehab finished.

It wasn't until after that we were made aware that this dude was HIV and Hep C positive. So we all had to get tested to make sure none of us caught it. Luckily we were all okay. The female guard had to get checked out for back injuries later.

After that day, I said fuck it. I quit. Shit isn't worth 12/hr, so I quit. I'm now much happier at my new job working IT.
