Have you ever tried a classic game years later, and found it's "legacy" missed the point?

I can think of games that do that without a sequel or legacy.

Path of Exile. The big draw to that game is being able to create so many different builds. . . but the gameplay is dim and a massive grind (made by grinding gear games ofc) and they killed most builds by having so many damage modifiers (through support gems) and health scaling that the only way to progress was to specialize in maximizing damage opposed to unique mechanical combinations.

So they give you all this creative space and then proceed to slowly reel it in until there is nothing except whatever simpleton builds they have rotated into the meta with the latest balance patch.
