Everyone’s hiring, but not really?

Actually just got asked to dust off my “Translating Your Degree into a Job” workshop and guest lecture at my alma mater for the third time, and here’s what I tell the capstone kids: Look at contract agencies, college job boards, set company specific job alerts, and attend meetings of your relevant professional organizations. 70% of jobs are found through networking according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, so I run through networking opportunities with them: LinkedIn, Handshake, social media, abstract reviewing, conferences, alumni association, Meetup, VolunteerMatch, American Red Cross, people you meet at certification test sites if you’re getting certified in a thing. We also practice what you say when you’re trying to network with people. Then we do resumes and LinkedIn, making sure they have their bullet points with an action and the result, keywords, and keep it short and tailored to the position they want. GRPL has a service that will review your resume for you and provide feedback. I’ve also used TopResume before.
