I know everyone talks about lowering score and the key is 150 yards in and short game, but for mid to high handicappers the first thing is sorting the driver or tee shot.

Here is my 2 cents on this issue:

Mid to high handicappers who want to improve their score will eventually need to sort out their driver. BUT it does not need to be the first thing. Or even the second thing.

Just because you can't hit your driver yet don't let that stop you from playing rounds of golf.

You can play rounds of golf with just irons and a putter.

In fact I would argue, if you are still a beginner who can't hit a driver for shit then don't bother to use a driver on the course until you hit it somewhat consistently. Give it serious attention on the driving range but keep playing rounds without it until ready. If you know you are going to slice your driver 150 yards to the right, don't bother hitting it on the course just hoping for a lucky fluke good drive. Just use irons and putter and have fun until the driver is ready.
