Everyone's Upstairs Neighbors

I live on the first floor. This pretty much describes my upstairs neighbors to a "T". They are so loud with their banging and whatever else they are doing up there: We have had pictures fall off the walls, we had a shelf with some collectibles of mine fall and break, and dishes are constantly rattling in the cabinets.

But it's not just upstairs:

My next door neighbor loves her some Beyonce and blasts her early solo work every afternoon while she vacuums.

The couple diagonal from me have a yappy dog that barks every time a door opens or someone walks by their windows.

Immediately across the hall is a family of folks who:

  • Speak loudly in the hall way (which is really a 10 X 10 room with GREAT acoustics, let me tell you) at all hours of the night, usually in their native language. When you go out there to ask them to please keep it down they pretend that they don't speak English... but they speak English just fine when the pizza delivery guy comes.

  • Let their kids scream and cry all day. I'm not a parent myself, so I can let this one slide because I don't know anything about kids. I do know some parents take the "Let them cry so they can learn that's not how you get what you want" approach.

  • Let their kids play monitored and unattended in the parking lot, around the dumpsters, along the edge of the street. At least three times this week I've had to ask their kids to stop climbing on my patio furniture and messing with the stuff I have out there.

  • Get upset when my dog (who is 13, fat, and slow) comes outside while their kids are playing. My dog literally squats to pee and then comes right back inside. Still the minute they see me bring him out, they start yelling for the kids to come inside. If my dog has to poop and we are out there for more than a minute or two, they stand at their windows glaring at us. Sometimes, I take my dog out the front door (which is hard on him because we have to go up and down stairs to do that) if he has to go out during their play hours just to avoid them, even though the yard is a common space. My dog is not a large breed. There's no stigma about the "violence" of his breed, either. In fact, just the opposite. He is a bulldog who sleeps 18 hours a day and spends the rest of the time cuddling his stuffed cow or getting his belly rubbed.

We specifically moved to these apartments because we wanted to be on the first floor, and to have access to a large yard, even if it was a common area.

  • The adults ride their bikes up close to our back door and windows, which in and of itself isn't a huge deal (though I do think it's rude), but sometimes it excites the dog and that's just annoying.

Also, no one told us that train tracks run about 500 feet from our back door, nor did they tell us that 5-10 trains a day go through the area. I feel like that's something management should legally have to tell perspective tenants, especially those moving from out of state.

I try really hard not to be a crotchety, picky neighbor, because I'm sure some of the stuff my husband and I do is loud, too, but we try to keep it down because we know if we can hear them, they can hear us. We've spoken to management a couple of times about the noise but it doesn't seem to do anything.
