PS -- am now thinking I did change Conexant Smart Audio settings recently, made the mistake of trying to turn it all off and learned that this meant I had zero sound, but somehow I recall having turned SOME of it off in the past. In other words, as with nearly all computer issues, "the problem is related to bloatware which was forced on you on the false assumption that it would help you, which is now trying to engage in an unwanted and hidden task, which has no adequate user-interface to inform you of what it is wrongly trying to do, and which is using up system resources at inopportune moments."
