This is a really optimistic take. They’re definitely exploited, not because they don’t understand they’re getting screwed, but because they don’t have a choice. By not working, people cannot live. They’re not working harder than their pay because they think they’re doing a good thing, they do it because they need to feed themselves. And I’m also much less sympathetic to the idea that they do good for society beyond their pay, because society, meaning consumers in this case, doesn’t even receive that excess benefit of their work, the business owners do. And to your last point, business owners wouldn’t raise wages if they don’t have to. Most would rather pay them the bare minimum. You’re right that they provide more value than they get paid for, but hoping that it’s naturally going to get better as we go on in time is misguided I think.
