Ex went to court a week early and petition for contempt for not paying child support was dismissed because he has filed bankruptcy. Tennessee

I know, it sounds crazy! I hired an attorney to help me when I found out that child support services was filing against him. I got this message from her assistant "I just spoke with the Magistrate's office, it appears that he showed up in court earlier in the week and even though it was not on the docket, the Magistrate heard it and since he has filed bankruptcy she signed an order dismissing the case. So there is no hearing Monday." At this time, the attorney is out of town, but her assistant has notified her.

I'm asking here just because I was Ted I would hear from her later next week, and I am just astounded and confused right now. How can a magistrate do that? Is it legal?
