The expenses of self publishing seem quite prohibitive. Is there a way to do this cheaply without sacrificing all my hard work?

Go for e-books. Here is my story. I self-published my first science fiction novella at zero cost three months ago. The cover was designed by a friend who was kind enough not to charge me. And I edited the book myself. It is very time consuming, but it is doable. Thus far, I have sold ten books. I did not go for beta readers or reviewers. I let it happen naturally. I have gotten two five-star ratings along with a review from two customers; one on Amazon and one on Goodreads. Copyright is automatic and cost free. If you go for paperback, which I will be doing in the future, it shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred dollars.
