Explaining getting fired and a two year gap

It’s a possibility. In the last week, I spoke to my old boss at a Fortune 500 who had been contacted by a potential employer. The potential employer asked for my former direct supervisor’s name. The supervisor and I talked and he said he wasn’t able to put anything in writing other than verifying employment and whether I was eligible for re-hire. He brought up the eligibility.

He did however suggest he could give a positive recommendation over the phone - just not in writing. So in a negative way, a former direct supervisor who fired you might also be able to communicate negative info. Especially over the phone, think of saying by-the-book info in a certain tone to convey whether you were good or bad.

I bet however that HR wouldn’t even know who you were. So you could try to direct that activity to HR. Good luck.
