Explaining Indexing to a stock picker

While it may be a hobby for some, I think most things that deal with money are very tightly tied to one's ego, and sense of intelligence/self worth.....more seriously than most things in life. By friendly questioning, or even sharing a contrary view to that very serious hobby, I've found that many (particularly, men) aren't able to disconnect from that ego.

Even in conversations that have ended on friendly terms, I usually walk away with a feeling that the other person just wanted to discuss so that they feel that their way is superior, because if it isn't, it invalidates their person, not just their hobby. Facts/evidence be damned. Results be damned. Of course, all of our experiences are different. Perhaps you know more open-minded people than I do.

For that reason, I'm no longer "happy" to talk about investing with these sorts of folks. I'm happy to discuss with someone new to the hobby who's genuinely seeking advice, but not those ingrained in their own ways.
