Tanks work, armour doesn't.

The Russians are just utter incompetent in their usage of tanks. Basically they are mobile gun platforms that can clear out intrenched positions, or counter enemy armour, but to be used effectively they require co-operation. Tanks suck in urban warfare,. Tanks suck without infantry protecting them. Tanks suck without artillery backing them up. Tanks sort of suck without air superiority.

To be fair, the main battle tank is sort of obsolete outside of large flat regions, and, are likely seeing a lot of their roles being replaced by light battle tanks as well as armoured personal carriers with bigger guns.

Ironically the fact that a lot of the ERA that OP has in the picture is very ineffective in modern warfare because it kills your own infantry and doesn't actually save the tank. But it's Russian, so you know that 90% of their R&D budget went to some guy's yatch and then he just told Putler that putting bombs outside the tanks was a good idea because it was cheap.
