Extreme poverty returns to America

I think most people at least manage to spring for a septic system. If you can get a loan or save up the money, a septic system for a small house is maybe a few thousand at most. Not cheap, but it'd be an investment that even uneducated backwoods folks would appreciate.

Well water is most definitely still a thing, even amongst neighborhoods with more money (since putting in a water system for houses that aren't close together is rather expensive), and hunting for game is definitely still a thing (the animals are closer than the store, and bullets/traps are cheaper), but relying on outhouses. . .yeah, that's scraping the bottom of the barrel.
