Facebook should ban campaign ads. End the lies.

Look, I see this a lot so I’m just choosing this particular comment to reply to.

I am a political organizer for young people in my city. My group tries to get young people more involved with politics, the local Democratic Party, and to vote. We’re trying to build more support in high schools to vote and bring tech talent to the party too.

Facebook is an absolutely critical part of that for my organization. If I deleted our Facebook page, we would have 0 people show up to our events. There would be no way to organize the resistance locally for young people. There just wouldn’t be another outlet to reach that many people. We wouldn’t be able to find volunteers, being new professional talent to the local party, or let the public know about our events. We use our page and political advertising (low budget) to get onto people’s radars.

It’s not that simple. My case is about liberal politics, but I assume it’s the same with small businesses too. Some organizations need social media in order to reach the people in their community. And similarly, that’s why banning all political ads can hurt locally. Grassroots organizing would be really set back without social media and small time political ads.

The best case scenario would, in my opinion, be regulation and transparency.
